Do I need to understand traditional music theory to transcribe using this system?
It always helps if you can read music, but you don't need to be an expert reader for this system. So long as you understand what you wrote, it'll still work. We do include a brief overview of classical notation in the 5 minute theory crash course- although, that's not the main goal. Transcribing note for note is slow and tricky to read on stage under pressure. This system focuses more on representing the actual parts with short-hand, as much as possible. It's a mixture of traditional notation, Nashville numbers, and your own personal symbols. Think of it as the mixed martial arts of drum charting.
Do I have to use an iPad?
I highly recommend using a digital tablet and pen to create your charts but it doesn't have to be an iPad. You can absolutely use an Android. The advantage of an iPad is that you can use forScore (purchased on the app store) which is exclusive to Apple. The course has many forScore tutorials, but the methods would be similar to Android apps such as MobileSheets. Either way, If you decide to go digital (It's so much better than paper) - get a pen or stylus to go with it.
